Shuttering Material Guide: What You Need for Concrete Formwork
Shuttering (formwork) is one of the most important aspects of concrete construction. Using the right materials ensures structural integrity and a clean finish.
What is Shuttering?
Shuttering is the temporary structure that holds wet concrete in shape until it hardens. The quality of shuttering directly affects:
- Surface finish of the concrete
- Structural strength of the slab/beam
- Cost efficiency — reusable materials save money
Essential Shuttering Materials
1. Shuttering Plywood Standard 8x4 feet sheets in 12mm or 18mm thickness. Film-faced plywood gives the smoothest concrete finish and can be reused 8-12 times.
2. Steel Props Adjustable props support the plywood from below. Available in sizes from 1.6m to 4.0m. Space them every 4 feet for proper support.
3. Centering Plates Steel plates that distribute load from beams to props. Essential for beam shuttering.
4. Accessories - Tie rods and wing nuts for wall shuttering - Clamps and fasteners for joints - Release oil for easy removal
Calculating Requirements
For a slab shuttering: - Plywood sheets = (Length × Width) ÷ 32 + 10% waste - Props = Area ÷ 16 (one prop per 16 sq ft) - Centering plates = Perimeter ÷ 4
